In the early 19th century, it is said that a master glass blower, feeling sorry for a Christmas tree overburdened by the weight of apples and berries woven as garland, experimented with blowing glass beads to lighten this load. His effort to reproduce the apple shape in glass followed by meticulous hand painting was heartily embraced by his village and the craft of hand blowing intricate shapes in glass thrived for centuries.
